Trondheim - City meets Nature

We leave the port by coach and head for the city centre, here we visit the crowded Market square, where there is also a statue of Olav Tryggvason, the Viking king who founded the city. We continue on our tour on  Munkegata (Monks Street), the broad avenue which leads to the Cathedral.

We then come to Nidaros Cathedral, originally built in 1070 but subsequently restructured on numerous occasions which has given it a Gothic-Romanesque style. It is one of the most beautiful and imposing cathedrals in Scandinavia and the best preserved Gothic building in Northern Europe. Trondheim and the whole of Norway are very proud of this magnificent Cathedral. The best pictures from outside can be taken on the westside.

After our visit in the Nidaros cathedral our next stop will be at the Kristiansten fortress which was build to defend Trondheim from the east. The fortress was constructed by Johan Caspar Cicignon after the big fire in 1681. Construction was finished in 1685 and soon after it was used to protect the city from invading Swedish forces in 1718. Later it was used as a fire-watch and still houses cannons that are used for ceremonial salves.

We leave the city and have a break at Sverresli – a panoramic viewpoint. Driving through Trondheim’s rural surroundings we proceed to the Granåsen ski-jumping arena, a sports facility where we may have the opportunity to see athletes training for ski jumping. The ceramic surface of the slides and the artificial turf enables ski jumping throughout year.

After the visit we return to the port by coach.
